I have 2 servers with APC Amart-UPS SUA1000 UPS units attached. The APCs have both serial and USB. One server is Windows 2008 Small Business Server and one is 2008 R2.I have the units plugged in using USB.In the past I just installed Powerchute and configured to e-mail when on battery. I looked for Powerchute agents that supported 2008 and found the 8.01 single server agent. This is just like the older 'free' business agent and does not support Exchange or SQL.I was going to buy Deluxe but according to APC the Deluxe agents only work on newer UPS units. I could monitor my 8.01 agents with an 8.5 server, however the 8.5 agent does not support my Smart-UPS 1000 UPSes so I would have to use the 8.01 agent which puts me right back where I started at using the 8.01 agent that does not support Exchange and SQL.I tried the power management built into 2008 and while it does detect the UPS and provide notification, I cannot find any notification. These servers will be on GFIMax monitoring so if I can just get something written in the event log or sent via SNMP I will be OK.I cannot find ANY entries in the event logs on either server that the server is on battery.

This is criminal of Microsoft in my opion. They can't be that stupid, can they?I also wonder about the built-in poer management and automatic shutdown of Server 2008 - will this do a 'proper' and 'clean' shutdown of SQL 2005 and Exchange 2007?I appreciate all assistance. Thanks experts! The management card should come with the software to install on the server. If not then you can download it from APC's web site.Just remember to put your network switch on the UPS as well, so that the packet for the shutdown can be sent.To manage the card itself, you do not need anything other than a web browser. After setting an IP address on the card, which is done either using the software supplied or by telnet to the card when it has a DHCP address, you simply browse to it.I picked up the card with the temperature probe as well, as it was cheap and then run SNMP graphing application against that.

Done the same with a few clients as well, which is good comprehensive proof they required air con in their computers rooms.Simon.

I have several computers connected to a single APC SmartUPS 1500. The UPS status is monitored by a server running acpupsd. The other computers also have apcupsd installed, and poll the main computer over the network to get the UPS status, and they shut down if a power loss event occurs.I want to add a computer running Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (free version) into the mix, but as far as I can tell it isn't possible to install apcupsd or other UPS monitoring software in the hypervisor. How can I get this machine to shut down during a power loss event? I mean why isn't it possible? It is currently impossible to install the USB driver on x64 versions of windows, due to signing issues, but you only want to use the network client part, so I fail to see how that would be a problem.

You'll just have to deal with everything from the command line.Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is just a Windows Server 2008 R2 Core install with all roles but Hyper-V server disabled, some helper scripts, and the odd funky behavior here and there. If you say it is not possible from a licencing point of view, we talked with MS at this one place where I work, and they explicitly told us that things like backup agents, extended hardware drivers (HP OpenView agents, etc) and somesuch were not considered 'usage', and were perfectly fine.In fact PowerChute Network Shutdown.I don't have any Core installs available in my lab to try it, but I'm fairly confident it would work, apcupsd has very little windows-centric requirements, it is just a service, which should in theory work. If not, a bit of hacking could make it work.If you report it does fail to work, I will setup a test vm with a Core install and give it a try, for kicks.
